Process

Concept & Inspiration
"What Remains" is an environment study exploring the contrast between past and present, focusing on atmospheric storytelling and visual composition.

Inspired by the bittersweet beauty of nostalgia, this piece reflects on the echoes of those who once existed here, the unspoken words left behind, and how places remember even when people are gone.

Blockout & Layout

I began by blocking out the scene to establish composition and camera framing. and adding assets to get the feeling.
As the scene developed, I replaced placeholders with detailed assets to refine the overall mood and visual cohesion.

I iterated on the layout by adjusting focal elements, adding assets, and testing different framing options to achieve the desired atmosphere. This process helped define the main focal points and guide the next steps for refinement.

Next Steps & ImprovementsTo enhance the environment and storytelling, I’ve identified key areas to focus on:

Assets Improvements:
- Grass & Overgrowth: Adding grass on the top of each floor to reinforce the sense of nature reclaiming the space.
- Climbing Vines: Currently using static models, but I plan to explore procedural generation techniques for more natural growth. More vines will be added to integrate the structures and enhance the atmosphere.
- Falling Leaves: Introducing falling leaves from the tree to add motion and a more organic feel to the scene.

Animations & Movement:
- Butterfly Motion: Creating a fluttering and flying movement to bring life and dynamism to the composition.
- Character Animation: Adding a human character sitting on the rooftop, possibly yelling or interacting with the environment to enhance the narrative.

I added procedural grass and foliage to enhance the overgrown, abandoned feel of the scene. I'm also working on dynamic falling leaves using Niagara to introduce subtle motion. Next, I’ll refine the vine growth on the walls for a more natural integration.

Lighting & Composition

As the scene took shape, I began refining the lighting to enhance depth, mood, and realism. I iterated by adjusting key lighting sources, experimenting with both main and local lights to create a natural yet cinematic feel.

Next Steps & Improvements
- Key Light Adjustments: Balancing natural sunlight direction to define shapes and contrast.
- Local Lighting: Adding subtle secondary light sources to highlight focal elements and guide viewer attention.
- Atmospheric Depth: Exploring fog, volumetric lighting, and subtle color grading to improve depth perception.
- Material Response to Light: Fine-tuning shaders and reflections to achieve a more polished final look.
